Structural Integration

What is SI?

Structural Integration (SI) is a modality to help unwind poor postural habits that have developed over our life time. Our posture is formed through development, injury, habitual movement, learned behavior, and even chronic sitting. Poor habits can affect the structure and function of our entire body. Improper movement can restrict the “fabric” of our structure otherwise known as fascia. Our fascia is a very important type of connected tissue, the fascial system holds the “shape” of us, it needs to be able to respond to both internal and external life. Structural Integration is based on the work of Dr. Ida P. Rolf. Ph.D. This type of body work involves assessment of gait, breath, and movement. The ultimate goal of SI is to increase space with in the body, create ease of movement, create better body awareness and proprioception, improve the breath and ultimately become resilient to gravity.

What to expect?

Prior to each session Stephanie will evaluate standing posture, walking posture, and breath movement.

Different from a massage where you are laying on the table receiving the treatment passively, in this work we work together in an active way to help create space as well as awareness of space with in the body.. I may say things like “point and flex your foot” while my hands are working on your tissue and muscle of the shin bone. It is important to compare and contrast your felt sense before and after. Therefore there is a lot of getting on and off of the treatment table.

Each session is about an hour and a half. Ideally, a 12 part series is done once a week for 12 weeks. Though this can be adjusted based on schedule of the client. However, be mindful that change in the body takes time, if too much time passes by without our the consistent re-education our body has a tendency to move back to its habitual pattern

What to wear?

It is important to see all the tissue structure and how it relates to the structure above, below and the body as a whole. Comfortable underwear, loose fitting shorts, bathing suit ( two piece for woman), sports bra are all helpful. Please avoid spandex or biking shorts as it makes it difficult to access and work with the tissue.

Three Series:

Not sure about a full 12 series commitment? Try a 3 part series! This series is a great first step into structural integration. You will receive an evaluation the same as a 12 series. This is a nice way to show you what structural integration could feel like, and that change can happen in the body.
